CRANSTON, R.I. (WJAR) — One year to the week since a fire decimated the Applebee’s restaurant at Garden City, Cranston officials have approved an application for a new location nearby.

A building permit approved on Oct. 14, 2025 shows the new location will be on the other side of Sockanosset Cross Road, next to the Shaw’s supermarket on Chapel View Boulevard.

The fire at the old Applebee’s, on October 16, 2024, caused a partial roof collapse and it also damaged the nearby Bistro 22, which was also forced to close.

Back at the time of the fire, Applebee’s had said it would be looking to open another location in Cranston.

The state fire marshal ruled the cause of the fire was accidental.

The one-story building that Applebee’s is renovating previously housed Orange Theory Fitness and other businesses.
